Although the Urban Campfire series holds its "house concerts" in the confines of Lion's Fieldhouse, the small space affords some of the same pleasures: It is as if you're sitting in the Golden Circle at the Verizon Center, but your wallet is about $100 heavier.

This month's installment brings singer-songwriters from as far afield as Ann Arbor, Michigan; Nashville, Tennessee; and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Last year's Kerrville New Folk winner Annie Gallup has been described as a beat poet and master of "spoke folk," (Folk-rap, anyone?), who was influenced early on by Woody Guthrie's "Talkin' Blues" and later, by the picking of Mississippi John Hurt.
Lounge pop is Frank Goodman's forté, and anyone who has seen Wayne Harper at the Martini Club knows that yesterday's kitsch is today's favorite crooner. Goodman pinches from Burt Bacharach, Joe Jackson, and Antonio Carlos Jobim.
And for something completely different, Deirdre Flint's story songs have been featured on the Dr. Demento radio show, a bizarre comedy program that has been broadcast nationwide for more than 30 years.

In a culture that demands that its popular music look as attractive as it sounds, the musician often amounts to little more than a youthful, sexy, super-stylish, airbrushed image - a mere tool in a marketing ploy. Yet the public's fixation on its entertainers' T&A seems to exclude DJs, deifying them instead for their impeccable timing on the turntables. Sure, a lot of them put plenty of spit and polish into their appearances, but the majority of them are recognizable by sound rather than sight. (It isn't that people don't pay attention to the DJ in the booth, it's just that the music is so mesmerizing - and it's so damn dark in those clubs.)

But there is the occasional beauty mark on the face of electronica. British-based DJ Rap, Charissa Saverio, is truly a model example. The glamour model-turned drum 'n' bass DJ is a highly sought-after producer and recording artist. She also owns her own label, Proper Talent, and signed with Sony's Higher Ground imprint in 1997. Saverio is writing and producing an album for Sony that she hopes to release later this year. In the meantime, she continues to tour internationally, making an appearance at Club Fuel on Saturday, January 18.
