Everyone’s favorite biergarten offers more than just oompa at the holidays. Kristkindlmarkt captures King William’s German heritage with unusual crafts like gingerbread houses and a visit from Nikolaus for the kids. If the Old World style quilts and pottery aren’t on your gift list, come for the food anyway. The menu includes Erbsensuppe (split-pea soup), brats with sauerkraut, Ruebens, Kaffee und Kuchen, and my favorite, gluehwein, warm red wine spiced with cinnamon and cloves.

This Latin-inspired market is such a cult favorite folks stand in line for hours to get in to the packed warehouse across the street from SAMA (and I’m not just a fan because I work at the Museum). Or maybe it’s the free hot chocolate and buñelos — a good enough reason to hang out in the crisp weather getting to know your line mates. Once inside, items from Peru, Ecuador, and Mexico include ceremonial hats and exotic ponchos, but many don’t know the market also contains items from non-Latin locales like Afghanistan, Morocco, and Malaysia.
