As part of San Antonio’s 16 de Septiembre celebrations, the Instituto Cultural de México will open a temporary exhibition of work by Mexican designers Pineda Covalin on September 12. Developed in collaboration with Mexico’s National Anthropology Institute in 1996, the line includes ties, scarves, handbags, shoes, jewelry, and apparel inspired by the art and traditions of Mexico: pre-Hispanic motifs, nature, architecture, mythology. “Pineda Covalin’s collection is a work that reflects Mexico’s roots,” says Instituto spokesperson Teresa Moreno. “Their mission is to present Mexico’s past in a contemporary way, through modern eyes.” The fashion show marks Pineda Covalin’s San Antonio debut, but the company’s products grace the shelves of high-end boutiques, museums, and hotels. Moreno says the newest collections include more accessories, as well as a deeper homage to multiple ethnic cultures. “These new designs still reflect the magic and passion of Mexico and its popular arts,” says Moreno, “but with patterns inspired by ancient textile traditions, and the rituals and costumes from ethnic groups found all over the Mexican Republic.” 6 p.m. runway show; 7 p.m. exhibit opens, Wed, Sep 12.
