It’s the little black batwing. Much as the fashion magazines are pushing tailored, retro femininity this season, some just aren’t that kind of girl. For these, local designers Herff Chistiansen created a mini “style staples” collection of basic black pieces that cover the effortlessly chic crowd, as well as those who can rock a slight ’80s-comeback vibe. Their batwing short-sleeve shirt, in 100-percent high-quality French terry knit, features a cowl neckline and a wide, hip-level waistband. The batwing sleeve? It’s a sleeve that’s part of the garment, not set in with shoulder seaming, and usually has a more open armhole. Combined with the cowl, it creates a wonderful architectural element close to the face, shows off lithe arms, and is perfect with skinny jeans and tapered wedge heels.

Herff Christiansen is comprised of Herff, an American based in San Antonio, and Christiansen, Danish, based in Austin. Between them, they’ve worked with La Mer skincare, Estée Lauder, Jo Malone perfumes, and Twentieth-Century Fox Studios. They create individual pieces that transcend trends and seasons. The current collection consists of four simple tops, in black or charcoal, that can be dressed casually or elegantly. Look for these key pieces and a new series in tonal sands and grays at Penny Lane in San Antonio and By George in Austin.
