Clothes-minded

It’s a wonderful thing when your Christmas shopping is done a few weeks in advance. That leaves the rest of the season to eat all the things you shouldn’t and drink a bit more than you should. If our November 21 holiday gift guide wasn’t sufficient, finish off the whole list by hitting two holiday gift market institutions: the Southwest School of Art and Craft’s art.i.copia and the San Antonio Museum of Art’s Bazar Sabado. Both take place Saturday, December 8 and offer differing delights.

Start at SAMA (and I’m not just saying that because I work there) — Bazar Sabado is in its 22nd year of free buñuelos and coffee for early birds. New additions to this year’s mercado include unusual African tribal pieces such as textiles, beads, a ceremonial chair and small sculptures; handbags, fashion, and ethnic jewelry from Southeast Asia; and Cuna Indian blouses with molas.

Then wander a scant mile or so down St. Mary’s to the SSAC. Art.i.copia stars the Rock Paper Scissors Collective this year — who among us doesn’t need one of Diana Kersey’s ceramic eyeballs or Paula Cox’s Cats on Maps? It will be your last chance to get a piece of Rhonda Kuhlman’s famous bottle-cap jewelry – after 15 years working in this medium, this will be her final series.
