So, New York’s fall 2008 fashion week is over, and new trends, shapes, colors, and influences are hitting magazines and blogs. But who can think that far ahead? Most of us haven’t even started planning for temperature’s inevitable rise. But March is blowing in, Fiesta’s right around the corner, and before you know it, you’ll be booking a cheap Mexican getaway. It’s the perfect time to take stock of last year’s wardrobe and pull together some bright and breezy outfits for spring.

Every organized closet starts with a key neutral. Pick one every spring and fall and build your looks around it. Black is a safe choice, but boring. Instead, hold on to the charcoal and medium-tone grays from winter, and add in some softer, silvery hues. Mocha browns, more dusty than earthy, are also big this season and more wearable. Just be sure to keep the tone light and slightly cooler — too warm and it will look heavy. Both gray and brown are perfect with spring’s misty pinks, juicy corals, and flowery purples. Navy is also sticking around and will be everywhere through winter.

Two shades from fall 2007 are still going strong in this spring’s collections — deep ultramarine blue and a strong flash of yellow. Both look chic and sophisticated with gray and brown neutrals, but may be overpowering in larger clothing items. Bring them out in accessories then. If you hesitated to get that big ochre handbag last fall, go for it now with a sunny tote or a pair of chartreuse flats.  No matter what the skies may look like, spring means a welcome dose of hot color.
