San Angel Folk Art, in the Blue Star Arts Complex, has been more than a “gift shop” for almost two decades — offering carefully curated pieces from artists ranging from our own Reverend Seymour Perkins to Chicano icon Alex DeLeon with one goal: recognizing San Antonio as a unique cultural crossroads. But this jumbled, welcoming, tardis-like space has also always served Clothes-Minded well for textiles and apparel that surprise, amuse, and set the wearer apart. Owner Hank Lee’s hidden stash of Japanese import and vintage fabrics in the back of the store eventually become his signature, decidedly untraditional, guayaberas, so famous and unusual they’ve found their way into Italian Vogue. But San Angel’s got more than your favorite kitschy
Mexicana — some new spring arrivals are worthy of note.

Santa Fe textile artist Kathy Jankiewicz’s huipiles are patched together from recycled bits of Mexican embroidery, tea towels, and tablecloths. No less than six local designers are represented in the T-shirt category, including Diablo Barbie, Lux Perpetua, and San Angel’s own papel-picado logo tees. And now, San Angel even carries underwear. Brand Ginch Gonch, a couple who became jealous of the wide range of fun undies for their kids, have grown-up sized briefs imprinted with hot dogs and trucks, and a line of airbrush-art, surf-inspired wear. Both are very popular with the high-school and
college crowd, notes Lee. Definitely cheeky.
