Sunglasses have been associated with movie stars since the beginning of the film industry (although not as much for disguise as to rest the eyes after days working under the powerful arc lights needed on set). What better way to charge some glamour into your summer wardrobe? Protection from UV rays doesn’t hurt, either. Fred Flare ( helpfully names their glasses after the film or star they’re inspired by. Help yourself to Risky Business or Speed Racer styles, or a starlet spectrum including Britney, Nicole, Gisele, and Mischa. At only $10 apiece, why not get a pair for every day of the week?

Looking for something more sophisticated? Banana Republic has just launched its own line of sunglasses, priced from $78 to $118 and including both classic aviators and the more trendy starlet-style Jackie Os. My choice? The Doris, with slightly squared-off lenses, provides good coverage, and comes in a lovely pale-gold frame option, lighter than the usual black or tortoiseshell.

I’ve never understood paying a ton of money for something I’m either going to sit on or lose before the year is up, but if sunglasses are your style signature, the designer must-haves I’m going to recommend this summer are by Bulgari. With clear acetate frames and Swarovski crystal accents, they’ll run you $660 at Sunglass Hut.
