Welcome to week two of the Wardrobe Refashion Challenge, in which we’ve vowed not to buy any new manufactured clothes for two months, instead relying on renovated, recycled, vintage, or handcrafted items to appease all our fashion needs.

This week we have a little craft project, suitable for both guys and girls, to breathe fresh life into old jeans, T-shirts, and cargo shorts.

Supplies: Cardboard to protect your work surface / Clorox bleach pen (a few dollars in the laundry aisle at H-E-B) / A design idea — sketch something freehand on a piece of paper, or download a stencil from the web. Words work, too — make your own brand name. / A piece of dark cotton clothing

Lay the clothing on a protected work surface. If the area you plan to alter is a sleeve or leg, place a piece of cardboard between the two layers of fabric to make sure the bleach doesn’t leak through. You can use a fabric marker, or even a pen, to lightly sketch out your design. Otherwise, lay out your stencil and tape down outside the stencil area. Make sure your fabric is flat. Apply bleach pen. Wait 30 minutes, then rinse in warm water and let dry. For a more diffuse look, experiment with a mixture of half water, half bleach in a spray bottle. Tape off the part of your clothing you don’t want altered by the bleach, and spray. Wait, wash, and dry as before. Voila! Customized clothing.
