Three days after Pixar’s Coco is released on Blu-ray/DVD, Slab Cinema will hold a special outdoor screening of the award-winning animated film for families to enjoy. Coco, which is basically a lock to win an Oscar for Best Animated Feature the night after the Slab Cinema screening takes place, tells the story of Miguel (Anthony Gonzalez), a young, aspiring musician who journeys to the Land of the Dead to find the truth behind his family’s musical history. The Current put Coco at No. 4 in its Top 10 Films of 2017 and called it, “the standard-bearer of what a positive Latino experience can look like on the big screen for years to come.” Last week, the Current spoke to Gonzalez and demanded an apology for making us ugly-cry at the end of the movie. “That’s the first thing people tell me — that the movie made them cry,” Gonzalez said. “I think it’s amazing because that means it touched so many people. I’d probably say 70 percent of the people that watched Coco cried.” So, yes, take a box of Kleenex, but more importantly, take your grandma(s).
