Lederhosen Lucil

The month of March represents many things to people in this part of the state: spring break at South Padre, South By Southwest in Austin, and, of course, Lederhosen Lucil's annual "Waltz Across Texas" tour with DJ Jester the Filipino Fist.

This is only the second year for this musical caravan, but it's quickly acquired the feel of a solid tradition. Jester, SA's beloved turntablist, first toured with Lucil in 2003 as part of the "Short Attention Span Theater" with her fellow Canadians, Kid Koala, and DJ P-Love. Since then, Jester has used SXSW as an excuse to bring Lucil's pigtailed giddiness to jaded Texans. This year, he raised the stakes by allowing local contestants to color a picture (, with the winner earning the honor of scarfing some catered Korean barbecue with these two fabulous icons.

If someone has to be the Pippi Longstocking of electro-pop, Lucil has the best claim on the title. In the spirit of her hero, Pee Wee Herman, the woman known to her friends as Krista Muir conjured up a sly cartoon of a character who speaks in an absurd Germanic accent and plays everything from dance-pop to heavy-metal originals on a gloriously cheap Yamaha keyboard. Her 2001 debut CD, Frozenhosen (repackaged the following year, with bonus tracks, as Hosemusik), with such new-wave gems as "All Good Scabs" and "Love Bites From an EKG," argues that behind the silliness of Lucil's persona, a highly clever tunesmith is hiding.

A year ago, Lucil's media bio described her as a genetic mutation born in Yamabierstein City in 1998. These days, she's confident enough to acknowledge her history as Krista Muir, and concede that Muir created Lucil. The move makes sense. After all, even Pee Wee eventually had to make room for Paul Reubens.
