Disappearing Edges, Pop Pistol’s new EP, is nothing but edge 

Power pop/electronica trio Pop Pistol is one of San Antonio’s most active and respected bands. But their party Friday night at Jack’s is more than just a CD release party. Disappearing Edges, the EP Pop Pistol is releasing through Texas is Funny Records, is the result of a triple alliance between the group, a local charter school, and a young, local entrepreneur who decided to “make it happen.”

It all started in October 2010, when Pop Pistol played a Halloween fundraiser for the San Antonio School for Inquiry and Creativity, an arts-oriented public charter school. The band was salivating over the school’s sizable multimedia recording studio and was willing to trade performance time for studio time, said bassist George Garza. The band earned enough time to record the basic tracks for four songs. The vocals and final mix were done at the studio of Chris Guerra (of the bands Morris Orchids and We Leave at Midnight), the school’s sound engineer. “It was a unique experience for us, unlike anything we’ve ever recorded in the past,” said Garza.

The band recorded three unreleased songs they’ve been playing for a while —“Skyscrape the World,” “Center of Asleep,” and “Mitote.” They also created a new version of a song included in the Shadows EP (2009), “Who Needs Forever.”

“We made it a little bit longer and added another part we play live and felt comfortable with,” said Garza. “It adds another dynamic to the song. We do a lot of momentum-driving movement, and we didn’t feel the original version lived up to what we pull off live with it.”

The EP (which will be reviewed in our next issue) shows how countless shows have helped Pop Pistol’s sound to mature.

“We started off as a rock band, but we wanted to experiment more with electronics, drum ’n’ bass, jungle music … and in the EP we added more samples than we do live, as we always do at the studio,” said Garza. “Everything we do is layering and stacking, and we’re always mixing in our heads, even when we play live.”

The other element in the equation is Scott Andreu, owner of Texas is Funny Records, founded in 2009. Disappearing Edges is TIF’s second release; the label’s debut release was Budian’s The Beast, put out in 2009.

“`Budian’s album` was more like a friend thing, but sometime last year it kind of clicked for me,” said Andreu. “I thought, ‘I’m not rich, but I have a little bit of money and I’d like to have a go at it.’” So he started focusing seriously on the label and has been trying to make a difference ever since. Instead of throwing mud at others, he gives credit where credit is due.

“What the San Antonio music scene lacks is a support structure, a business support,” he said. “But more and more there’s people in town who say, ‘You know what? I can make it happen.’ `Gordon Raphael’s` Vaudeville Records just started up, and other people have labels … Technically, there’s competition, but in reality, there’s so much room in San Antonio for this. The city is so big and we’ve only tapped into this market a little bit. There is a huge audience, but it just needs more people working it.”

“We’re excited,” said Garza about their TIF signing. “We bought a console to record on our own, and the idea is to put out two or three more EPs and then release a one-CD compilation package. But this is a new beginning for us.”
