The nineteenth-century’s great painter of modern life, Édouard Manet often looked to the art of earlier eras for inspiration. This lecture will examine how his discovery of the French Rococo—pictures painted by Jean-Antoine Watteau, Jean-Baptiste-Siméon Chardin and other eighteenth-century masters—inflected Manet’s portrayal of his own time.
