Down By The Riverside: The Blind Boys of Alabama & The Dirty Dozen Brass Band

When: Thu., Feb. 25, 8 p.m. 2016
Price: $45-$55
SPONSORED -- Gospel icons THE BLIND BOYS OF ALABAMA join together with the Crescent City’s preeminent brass band pioneers THE DIRTY DOZEN BRASS BAND for a joyous night of Southern spiritual music and New Orleans rhythms. Featuring individual band performances, as well as on-stage collaborations, the DOWN BY THE RIVERSIDE tour finds these two legendary artists sharing the stage for the first time. The Dozen return to their roots with material that inspired their 10th album Funeral For A Friend – a deeply spiritual homage to the New Orleans jazz funeral, while the Blind Boys re-visit traditional selections from their 2009 Grammy winning CD Down In New Orleans. The result is a soulful and uplifting meeting of jazz and gospel, from the stirring rendition of ‘Amazing Grace’ to the roof raising favorites ‘I’ll Fly Away’ and, of course, ‘Down By The Riverside’. Preserving through seven decades to become one of the most decorated gospel groups in the world, THE BLIND BOYS OF ALABAMA have the rare distinction of being recognized as both living legends and modern-day innovators. With a live show that becomes a roof-raising musical event, the Blind Boys appeal to audiences of all cultures. In 2013 the band worked with Justin Vernon (of Bon Iver) to release I’ll Find A Way, a powerful collection of gospel and spiritual songs new and old, featuring some of the Blind Boys’ most fervent vocals as well as contributions by a new generation of Blind Boys fans, including Merrill Garbus of tUnE-yArDs, Patty Griffin, and Justin Vernon himself. THE DIRTY DOZEN BRASS BAND is a world famous music machine, whose name is synonymous with genre-bending romps and high-octane performances. They have revitalized the brass band in New Orleans and around the world, progressing from local parties, clubs, baseball games and festivals in their early years to touring nearly constantly in the U.S. and in over 30 other countries on five continents. The Dirty Dozen have been featured guests on albums by artists including David Bowie, Elvis Costello, Dr. John, Widespread Panic, Modest Mouse, Dave Matthews Band and the Black Crowes.
