Brian DePalma’s button-pushing thriller aroused controversy (or publicity) for several reasons in 1980. First, it opens notoriously with Angie Dickinson (or her body double) masturbating in the shower. Then there’s a bloody razor-blade murder witnessed by a prostitute (Nancy Allen) and many critics complained that DePalma was too much of an Alfred Hitchcock copycat, only sleazier. The picture was a hit, however, and its sinuous widescreen style stands the audience-teasing test of time, thanks partly to Pino Donaggio’s dreamy score. Michael Caine co-stars in this sleek thriller which kicks off the McNay’s new film series inspired by the exhibition “Dressed to Kill: Glam and Gore in Theatre.” A tour of the exhibition (1pm) and "killer movie treats" (1:30pm) precede the screening.
