Eat BBQ and Give Back at CPS Energy's GrillsGiving

It seems we’ve skipped fall altogether and winter has reared its ugly head again. Due to the steep drop in temperatures we’re facing, everyone is starting to pile on layers and layers of clothing before heading out and cranking up their heaters once they get home. We’re just not well-suited for the cold here in San Antonio, so heating bills are going to skyrocket with this weather, forcing some people to choose between going cold or going hungry. Fortunately, CPS Energy has come up with a way to help those who are less fortunate during our sudden onslaught of Winter.

This weekend, CPS is hosting its first ever GrillsGiving: Grillin’ with a Mission. Aptly named, GrillsGiving is a barbecue festival and cook-off to kick start Turkey Day celebrations.

The festival will feature artisan booths, food trucks, kids’ activities such as face painting and a magic show, and live music. The Derailers will be headlining the event, but Malford Milligan, The Beale Brothers, and the ever-popular Los #3 Dinners will also be performing.

GrillsGiving’s barbecue cook-off will consist of 25 teams competing in three categories: brisket, chicken, and ribs. Yes, all you hungry people attending the event will be able to purchase samples of the teams’ foods. A value wristband may be purchased for $25 and will grant you access to the event, as well as four free barbecue samples and two drinks. The cook-off will be judged by several local SA celebrities, including the Current’s own food and nightlife editor, Jessica Elizarraras.

If the “Grills” half of the festival isn’t enough to get you interested, then here’s where the “Giving” comes in —the event’s proceeds will go toward Residential Energy Assistance Partnership. REAP is a program whose mission is to help disabled individuals, disadvantaged elderly, and low-income families with small children pay their CPS energy bills. REAP recipients are eligible for financial assistance once each during the heating and cooling seasons, so go out to GrillsGiving this Saturday because, with every purchase you make, you will be helping to heat the homes of those less fortunate than you.

GrillsGiving will be held this Saturday, November 15 at Mission County Park from 12:00pm-8:00pm. General admission to the event is $15, but VIP tickets and wristbands are also available. Tickets can be purchased here. For more information, visit
