“El Encuentro” — Espira

“The Encounter” plays more like all-out linguistic warfare. Militant drumming calls cadence for a low-key, en español intro encroaching on rock/Tejano No Man’s Land, a breach thwarted at the threshold by a full-scale American metal assault. The bilingual battle continues for five minutes while English and Spanish struggle to dominate the front. No clear victor ever emerges as the languages and genres collide and even overlap, but all that remains in the battle’s aftermath is that same singular drum, reduced to a broken roll, rain-soaked and eventually replaced by the indifferent tweeting of birds.
