Flavor File: Earth Burger’s 40K Kickstarter, Thai New Year at Tuk Tuk, Mid-Point Grill debuts in Five Points

Earth Burger, SA’s soon-to-be first vegetarian fast-food joint, was finally approved for its $40,000 Kickstarter campaign last week. Brought to you by the same folks behind two San Antonio Green Vegetarian Cuisines (and one in Houston), Earth Burger will open at 722 NW Loop 410 inside the Park North shopping center with an array of burgers, wraps and healthy sides (hummus, kale salad). Veggie fans can donate at just about every level: $10 gets you a high ten and a social media shout out, while $10,000 helps ensure the kitchen remains kosher. Pledges of $250 mean you can stop by the Culinary Institute of America-San Antonio during the menu preview event on April 16 to sample the menu. As of press time, 144 backers had pledged to donate $12,139 of the original goal; the Kickstarter campaign closes Monday, April 28 at 10 p.m.

Speaking of Green, Mid-Point Grill has opened inside Green’s original location in Five Points (1017 N Flores). The restaurant, opened by David Vidal and chef Tony Torres, will include American eats with a twist while also focusing on higher quality meats, non-GMO produce and wild-caught fish. During a soft opening this past Friday, the menu included red tortilla fish tacos with cabbage slaw, a pretty tasty grass-fed burger and naan pizza with habanero jack cheese and chorizo. Dishes will range from $10 to $25; Mid-Point Grill will open 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Tuesday-Wednesday and 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Sunday-Thursday.

Another downtown hotel has beefed up its food options as Market on Houston opened for breakfast, lunch and dinner on April 1 inside the Sheraton Gunter Hotel (205 E Houston). The restaurant space underwent a makeover and now features an impressive wine list, digital handheld menus filled with American fare, a small market and a bakery. The bar carries eight Texas beers on draft.

There’s New Year’s, Chinese New Year and Thai New Year, and they’re all an excellent excuse to drink. Tuk Tuk Tap Room will host Songkran to celebrate Thailand’s traditional New Year’s Day on Sunday, April 13 at 2:30 p.m. with Thai street food and craft beer pairings by bearded boss-dude Steve Newman. In yuck-o news, Sprouts Farmers Market has issued a recall after learning traces of salmonella were detected in a sample of Simply Organic black peppercorns during an inspection by the Food and Drug Administration. Check those spice racks ASAP.

And lastly, Bar America (723 S Alamo) is reopening its doors April 11 under new but familiar management, as the previous owner’s grandson has taken over the business in an effort to give it new life. We’ll drink to that.
