The NEISD institution formerly branded by the name of a certain Confederate general, now known as LEE High School (Legacy of Educational Excellence), announced Monday that it will auction off memorabilia from the school.

The controversial name change followed a student-signed petition drafted and reviewed by the North East school board after a pro-Confederate, Neo-Nazi and Ku Klux Klan rally in Charlotte, North Carolina made headlines in August 2017.

Next month, the school opens its doors with its new name. Though the name was changed with an unanimous 7-0 vote, it has remained controversial for many residents, especially Lee alumni, who feel like history is being erased on both sides.

As if to compromise, an on-campus museum is being constructed to house a statue of Robert E. Lee as well as artifacts, photos, replicas of class mosaics and more from the school. That's where the auction comes in, since the museum won't be able to fit all of the memorabilia.
Many Facebook users think it's disrespectful that the district is auctioning items, many of which were donated. For those not completely offended by NEISD's gesture, the online auction will run from July 16 to July 30 and can be accessed here during that time.
