National Hunger Awareness Day

The San Antonio Food Bank will observe National Hunger Awareness Day June 7, with two events to raise awareness of the problem of hunger in the city and the nation. The event begins at 10 a.m. with a reception and open house at its offices, 4311 Director, featuring guest speakers State Senator Leticia Van de Putte and outgoing mayor Ed Garza. In the evening, The Sanctuary, 1818 Main, will host an all-ages Rock Against Hunger Concert at 7 p.m., featuring Powderburn, Pitbull Daycare, Structure, Hearts Fail, and Empathy's Gone. Tickets for the concert are $10 and all proceeds go to the San Antonio Food Bank. For more information call 337-3663.


Belly up to the bar

If you've got more bottle-flipping skills than Tom Cruise in Cocktails, now is your chance to shine. The annual "Quest for the Best Bartender Competition" starts at 8 p.m. on June 7 at Sherlock's Baker St. Pub & Grill, 16620 Hwy 281 North. Veteran bartenders will compete for $4,500 in cash and prizes and the opportunity to capture the title of State Champion. Contestants must demonstrate not only a superior knowledge of all things cocktail and beer, but also speed, daring, and skill as they juggle, twirl, and toss their bottles. The contest is free to enter and watch. For more information call 572-9307.

USDA summer food service program

School is out, but three elementary schools will continue to provide free breakfast and lunch to children 18 and under. There is no registration for the meals; children need only show up at the appropriate time. The meals are provided by local sponsors and the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

At Regency Place Elementary, 2635 Bitters, breakfast will be served from 8-8:30 a.m., and lunch from 11:45 a.m.-1 p.m. Monday-Thursday, June 8-July 12. Larkspur Elementary, 11330 Bel Air, and Montgomery Elementary, 7047 Montgomery, will offer breakfast from 7:30-8 a.m. and lunch from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Monday-Thursday, June 6-July 12.
