Home, home on the range

On Saturday mornings, Rancho de la Chuparrosa can be found at Madhatter's Teahouse, 320 Beauregard, from 8am-noon and Artisans' Alley, 555 Bitters, from 10am-1pm, selling locally grown vegetables and meat. The farm is not USDA certified organic, but the grower asserts its vegetables are grown without pesticides or chemical fertilizers, and its free-range chickens have never had antibiotics or hormones. "We just felt the certification process was too expensive and time-consuming," said Matt Hansen, who set up the lone booth at Madhatter's this past Saturday, selling tomatoes, lemon cucumbers, onions, and carrots. "We can't call our vegetables and chickens organic, but they are and we invite our customers out to see the farm any time, and see how things are grown."

Chickens weigh 3-5 pounds and cost $3 a pound. The Chuparrosa also partners with its neighbor, Shudde Ranch, to sell USDA certified organic green-grasses-fed beef that has been raised without steroids or hormones. Both ranches are located in Sabinal. For more information, call 830-966-3600.

On Tuesday, July 14, Liberty Bar celebrated its 20th anniversary, pouring free glasses of champagne for folks lucky enough to lunch there that day. If you missed it, no worries, there is still time to get in on the fun. In honor of the restaurant's long friendship with Southwest co-founder Herb Kelleher, Liberty Bar is dressing up its standard plate of housemade bread with garlic roasted peanuts with chile de arbol and peanut salsa, a savory blend of chiles anejos and guajillos, cucumbers, garlic, and lime juice. Owner Dwight Hobart says, "We know you have a choice when you dine, and we appreciate you choosing to dine with Liberty Bar." Happy Birthday Liberty Bar!

Red rice and beans make everything nice

Algurita Craig's Café Algiers, 6060 Montgomery, is now open. The restaurant serves down-home southern, Creole, Cajun, and barbecue in a mellow, jazz-filled atmosphere. Chef Elder's menu includes oxtails, greens, cornbread, red beans and rice, gumbo, and much more. Café Algiers is open 7am-3pm Tuesday-Thursday, 7am-9pm Friday and Saturday, and 12-6pm Sunday.
