What’s this we hear about chef Mark Bliss returning to Silo Restaurant? Does it signify a revamping of the bar? A new menu?

Apparently, it’s none of our beeswax. “I’m in the preliminary process of looking for a second location `for Silo`,” said Patrick Richardson, a representative of Frontier, which also owns Jim’s and the Magic Time Machine. “You may have heard a rumor that Mark Bliss is coming back, but rumors get people in trouble.”

Remember that sage advice, ladies, as you head out to The Melting Pot, 14855 Blanco, for the restaurant’s Girls’ Night Out, 6:30 p.m. Monday, February 27. A four-course fondue-a-thon, Girls Night Out promises cheese fondue produced tableside, a chocolate dessert, and two glasses of wine. Ladies in attendance will have the opportunity to win door prizes and pick up free swag from Isabelle’s Day Spa, Balance Acupuncture, and EuroTan. By reservation only, $30. Info: 479-6358.

Next month, 17 students will don pristine white coats for the first day of culinary school at The Center for Foods of the Americas, and will have the pleasure of breaking in the school’s brand-new kitchens at the Pearl Brewery site. The first session opens March 7, with students attending morning classes from 7 a.m.-1:30 p.m. There are still spots available for the evening session, 2-8:30 p.m., which begins May 8. Each session can accept up to 20 students; enrollment closes March 20.

Shelly Grieshaber, CFA director, says the student body ranges from ages 18 to 55, with seven women and 10 men. “It’s too early to say, but so far it’s a pretty good mix,” she says. “Hispanics are well represented, and we were happy to have several individuals apply who were over 40.”

On the subject of delayed openings, Ruta Maya River Walk, 107 E. Martin, has postponed its grand opening soirée until mid-March, but the café is open and serving organic Fair Trade coffee, smoothies, and pastries from 7a.m.-11 p.m. Monday-Sunday.
