Justin’s Ice Cream has learned a few new tricks and taken its show uptown to 2512 N. Main. “We are going to be the first successful transplant from the River Walk,” said Justin Arecchi, adding that they didn’t want to move, but now that they’ve arrived, “we want to be a neighborhood gathering place.”

Lucky Monte Vista-ites can now walk to Justin’s for muffins and coffee in the morning, muffaleta pannini and Andalusian gazpacho at noon, and ice cream, well, any old time of the day. Justin’s offers 24 house-made ice creams daily (from Arecchi’s 150 recipes), and a variety of gelato, fresh-fruit sorbets and sherbets, and nonfat frozen yogurt. The ice creamery has also applied for a beer and wine license. New hours are 6 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-9 p.m. Saturday. Info: 736-1457.

What do you get when you combine Big Foot, a mariachi band, and a watermelon thumping contest? The 35th Annual Texas Folklife Festival, a four-day tribute to the Lone Star state’s original pioneers (Big Foot? That’s right, the wooly boogler was the first Justice of the Peace in Pecos County. Oh, wait, that was Judge Roy Bean).

Held downtown at the Institute of Texan Cultures, the festival includes folk dance, arts and crafts, and more than 150 ethnic foods — like noodles? Choose from Filipino pancit, Wendish noodles, and Chinese long-life noodles — and 65 bands. The Texas Folklife Festival runs from June 8-11: 5-11 p.m. Thursday-Friday, noon-11 p.m. Saturday, and noon-9 p.m. Sunday. $8 adults, $4 kids. Info: or call 458-2390. (See related story, this page.)

Ah chocolate, how do we love thee? On Thursday, June 22, Citrus chef Jeffrey Balfour is offering Chocolate Decadence, a six-course dinner that explores chocolate in its many forms and flavors.

Balfour will pair wine with such cocoa-inspired comestibles as Hawaiian spearfish with white-chocolate sea foam and dark chocolate soup. Dinner is $55 and starts at 7 p.m. at Citrus, 150 E. Houston, 230-8412. Don’t be late.
