As an executive editor for Texas Monthly, a contributing opinion writer for The New York Times and a National Magazine Award winner with clips from Vanity Fair, Esquire and The New Yorker, author Mimi Swartz is among San Antonio’s high-profile exports. Whether she’s covering the rise and fall of Enron, the legacy of Barbara Bush, parenting amid the everyday chaos of the Trump era or why “so few novelists write about Houston” (we might ask her the same about San Antonio), Swartz delivers exacting writing that’s packed with detail, personality and atmosphere — but also easy to digest. For her recently published and widely praised book Ticker: The Quest to Create an Artificial Heart, Swartz trained her focus on revered surgeon O.H. “Bud” Frazier and other medical trailblazers in their tireless efforts to revolutionize cardiology through creative innovation and technological advances. Billed as “part investigative journalism, part medical mystery,” and likened by Publishers Weekly to a “medical thriller,” Ticker goes far beyond doctors’ offices and operating rooms to introduce a colorful cast of supporting players — such as Mattress Mack, a Houston “furniture king” who became an unlikely financial backer for the cause. Presented as a standalone program of the San Antonio Book Festival, Get Lit with Mimi Swartz brings the author home for a conversation with Texas Public Radio reporter Bonnie Pierce to be followed by an audience Q&A and book signing.
