Critic's Pick Release Date: 2011-05-18

Locally based photographer and filmmaker Debra Sugerman is the co-founder of Creativity for Peace, a camp in Santa Fe, N.M., that nurtures understanding and leadership in Palestinian and Israeli adolescent girls. Five teenagers from the first Creativity for Peace camp accompanied Sugerman on a cross-country mission to break down barriers by hand-delivering a joint statement and art installation to then-President George W. Bush. Dear Mr. President, Sugerman’s corresponding documentary, chronicles their road trip, during which the girls gave informal talks and created art projects based on themes of peace and coexistence. Three years after the documentary’s 2006 premiere, one of the teens (Bessan) was killed by Israeli tank fire in the north of Gaza, inspiring Sugerman to return to Israel and Palestine to film Broken, considered the epilogue to Dear Mr. President. Both films screen in the McNay’s Chiego Lecture Hall as part of the museum’s Get Reel Film series. Free, 6:30pm, Chiego Lecture Hall, McNay Art Museum, 6000 N New Braunfels, (210) 824-5368,
