Formed in the early 1960s as a cultural arm of the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee, the pioneering Free Southern Theater lives on through Junebug Productions, a New Orleans-based organization that strives to “support artistic works that question and confront inequitable conditions that have historically impacted the African-American community.” Funded by the New England Foundation for the Arts’ National Theater Project and co-commissioned by San Antonio’s own Carver Community Cultural Center, Junebug’s original new production Gomela/to Return: Movement of Our Mother Tongue connects dots between Louisiana, Haiti and Africa through a multidisciplinary performance based on “hope, survival, courage and the resilience that exists in the face of oppression.” Directed by Stephanie McKee, Gomela spins inspiration from both the Black Lives Matter and gentrification-focused Place Matters movements into a provocative piece fusing African drumming, dance, spoken word, hip-hop and jazz.
