"Greater Than 40"

Like every other facet of our society, the art world has historically paid a disproportionate amount of attention to men and, secondarily, to younger women. Brought to you by Negative Space, the new curatorial venture from Sarah Fisch and Ann Enzminger, Brick will host a one-day pop-up exhibit that shines the spotlight solely on women artists beyond the age of 40. Conceived as a defiant retort to “the ubiquitous ‘40 Artists Under 40’ lists,” the pop-up, Negative Space’s first, challenges the assumption that to make something new and wonderful you have to be young. In the press release, Fisch said, “I could sit around and complain about not seeing enough representation of us, or I could put my energy towards asking female artists I knew if they’d be interested in showing together.” While 20 artists, all absolutely worth checking out, are participating in this show, we are especially looking forward to seeing what’s new from Anel Flores, Paula Owen, Anne Wallace, Kimberly Aubuchon, Danielle Cunningham, Marcy McChesney, Cathy Cunningham-Little and Margaret Craig.
