As part of its mission to collect and preserve “unique research materials documenting the diverse histories and development of San Antonio and South Texas,” the UTSA Libraries Special Collections houses archives dedicated to interests ranging from Mexican-American history and the Tex-Mex food industry to activism and gender studies. As UTSA assistant archivist Melissa Gohlke pointed out when Special Collections acquired a “treasure trove” of vintage periodicals from the Digital Transgender Archive, “LGBTQ materials are a collecting priority.” That particular priority comes into focus this week with “Hidden from History: 300 Fun Facts from San Antonio’s LGBTQ Past,” a talk presented in conjunction with the San Antonio Public Library’s Pride month programming. With a wink at the Tricentennial, Gohlke’s presentation promises to “uncover 300 (approximately!) fascinating facts about our city’s LGBTQ past and help bring these stories to light.”
