John Chatmas’ exhibition, High Noon, is full of ambiguities that could be viewed as one step up from an inkblot. Chatmas’ painted reliefs and works on paper attempt to answer how one’s sense of wonder, meaning, and value can become more engaged, and what reaction do we have even when what we experience is something neither clearly real nor an illusion. High Noon may say something about what we like or dislike about our culture, or may only evoke the uncertainty inherent in ambiguous situations. In either case, it speaks about the forces and conditions that affect our lives.
