Jefferson Davis Statue Moved From South Lawn At University Of Texas At Austin

After contentious debate and a legal challenge, the Jefferson Davis statue at the University of Texas has been removed, according to multiple media reports.

The Sons of Confederate Veterans had sought to stop the removal of the statue, but a judge denied it last Thursday, The Daily Texan reported.

The Davis statue's new home will be in UT's Briscoe Center for American History. The statue was removed Sunday.

Earlier this year, the statue was spray-painted with the Black Lives Matter slogan. The statue was a target after a white supremacist murdered members of a historic black South Carolina church.

UT student government voted to remove the statue from campus in March.
