In 2012, San Antonio became the first major Texas city to name a poet laureate. Today, the city named the third poet to take the role: local writer and educator Jenny Browne.

"I'm incredibly honored to have the opportunity to serve as San Antonio Poet Laureate," Browne said in a news release. "I'm thrilled that this position exists because it suggests that the city values the potential of poetry to expand human understanding and experience. I look forward to finding new ways of enlarging the voice of poetry in San Antonio."

Browne teaches poetry, creative writing, gender studies and other topics at Trinity University. She's published three poetry collections, including her most recent book, Dear Stranger, which published in 2013. She also founded and directed the Good Samaritan Center’s Literary Arts Program on the West Side.

The poet laureate's job is to promote poetry while celebrating San Antonio culture. Browne will receive $7,000 over two years as part of the job.

Browne will officially assume the post when she's appointed on Monday, March 28. She's San Antonio's third poet laureate, following Carmen Tafolla, the city's first poet laureate who held the post from 2012 to 2014, and Laurie Ann Guerrero, who served from 2014 to 2016.
