Jimi Hendrix: Hendrix in the West

The fourth wave of remixed Hendrix releases continues with this album of 1969-1970 live performances first released posthumously in 1972. The album starts chillingly with "The Queen," a version of "God Save The Queen" recorded a little over a month before Hendrix's death. Unlike the original version of the album, which wrongly featured "Voodoo Child" and "Little Wing" as coming from a concert at the San Diego Sports Arena (they were actually from London shows), this new edition includes instead the actual San Diego version of "Voodoo Child" and a San Francisco Winterland version of "Little Wing." Long out of print, this re-edition features, besides the San Diego and SF songs, tracks recorded at the Isle of Wight and at the Berkeley Community Center. Check blogs.sacurrent.com on Friday for a review of the full 4-disc Winterland box set, which is absolutely glorious, but don't dismiss this one: the roaring version of "Johnny B. Goode" and the Hendrix-ized, reinvented cover of "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" (which he played in front of the Beatles in London even before the Sgt. Pepper's album came out) are some of the highlights.
