His sarcastic delivery and sociologist’s eye for observation have often earned comedian and former Saturday Night Live writer John Mulaney comparisons to Jerry Seinfeld — which didn’t do any favors for his sitcom Mulaney, canceled after 13 episodes. Although he is capable of dissecting minutia and pop culture, Mulaney’s best material has more in common with David Sedaris or even David Foster Wallace than Evening at the Improv. He describes moments in his life in hyper-definition, sometimes navigating New York City with a geographic precision that seems inspired by James Joyce’s Ulysses sometimes interrupting his own anecdote to recount the major plot points of the 1993 Harrison Ford film The Fugitive for seemingly no good reason whatsoever. From Mulaney’s vividly painted perspective, it seems that meeting the soon-to-be president of the United States as a young boy is not more or less momentous than overhearing a weird conversation while working as an office temp or the time he repeatedly played “What’s New Pussycat?” on the jukebox just to piss people off in a diner.
