Justin Rodriguez's Appointment as Bexar County Commissioner Creates a State House Vacancy

State Rep. Justin Rodriguez's swearing in today as Bexar County Commissioner leaves an open Democratic seat in the Texas House of Representatives days before the start of a new legislative session.

County Judge Nelson Wolff appointed Rodriguez to the position Friday, following the death of Paul Elizondo, an 83-year-old powerbroker who held it since 1983.

Bexar County tweeted footage of Rodriguez being sworn into office this morning by Judge Peter Sakai in front of a group of county officials and family members.   The appointment creates a vacancy for House District 125, which Rodriguez has represented since 2012. A special election is likely to determine who will succeed him for the rest of the term.

Although the upcoming legislative session begins Tuesday, Rodriguez told the Texas Tribune he's confident a replacement could be in place by March, when the session shifts into full gear.

Rodriguez, who served on San Antonio's city council before winning election to the House, said he has no preference who follows him as state rep.
