Killers, mutants, enfants

The Host (Magnolia): This deeply odd Korean import updates the Asian-monster-movie with Jaws-style peril, an unpredictable sense of humor, and a none-too-timid critique of lumbering American imperialism. It’s a blast, and its arrival on high- and standard-def DVD ensures that fans can see every drop of saliva dripping from the tentacled mutant’s maw.

Zodiac (Paramount): David Fincher’s true-life manhunt is much more gripping than some yawning reviews suggested. But high-def devotees should hold back, as this week’s DVD will be supplemented by a Blu-ray version in mid-September.

The Henrik Ibsen Collection (BBC): Best friend to lazy Literature majors everywhere, the BBC returns with another of their top-shelf author-themed box sets. This one offers Ingrid Bergman in Hedda Gabler, Anthony Hopkins in Little Eyolf, and enough Denches and Gambons to round out six full discs.

Les Enfants Terribles (Criterion): Just before making his name with delicious crime movies, Jean-Pierre Melville teamed with Jean Cocteau for this 1950 adaptation of the latter’s celebrated novel. Centering on an unhealthy bond between a brother and sister who live together, it’s not for the easily disturbed.

WOO!: The Chow Yun-Fat
kickassathon Hard Boiled, in and out of print for years, gets a major spruce-up from the Weinstein Co.’s “Dragon Dynasty” line. Better news for those of us who own that already, Woo’s more obscure Last Hurrah for Chivalry is here as well, reminding us that before orchestrating legendary scenes of balletic gunplay, the filmmaker actually staged a swordfight now and then.
