Lil Wayne

Release Date: 2009-03-25

The last time I checked, Chuck D, KRS-One, and Kool G Rap are thankfully still breathing and recording music, making Lil Wayne’s claim to be “the greatest rapper alive” seem hollow at best. Weezy gets props for dropping the best-selling album of ’08, crafting the definitive post-Katrina anthem in “Georgia Bush,” and writing an accessible sports blog, but lyricism has never been his strongest suit. It’s coy how some of his biggest songs, “Mrs. Officer” for example, take standard rap tropes and twist them on their heads, but when it comes down to it, Mr. Carter is all about persona. Still, a grizzled rap veteran at age 26, the man who ushered “bling” into the lexicon is at the height of his powers and remains the most mystifying embodiment of W.E.B. Du Bois’ double consciousness in contemporary popular culture. At least for now, it’s Wayne’s World and we’re all just living in it. $37.75-$77.75, 7pm, Wed, Mar 25, ATT&T Center, 1 AT&T Center, (210) 224-9600, attcenter.com
