The Tobin Center is bringing in the one and only Lou Diamond Phillips, who played Ritchie Valens in the 1987 film La Bamba (certainly a contender for S.A.'s collective favorite movie). La Bamba follows the life story of the late Valens, who became an overnight rock 'n' roll success in 1958. He gained fame for his love ballad "Donna," which he wrote for a girlfriend whose parents didn't want her to date him because he was Latino.
Fans of the movie also love the storyline between Valens and his brother Bob, played by Esai Morales (who we interviewed earlier this year). Bob famously yelled "RITCHIE!" when he learned his brother had died in a plane crash. Valens' real-life brother passed away in September.
Following a screening of La Bamba, Phillips, who grew up in Corpus Christi, will take part in a moderated discussion on Sunday, March 24, 2019. Those totally obsessed with the film can even purchase a meet-and-greet for $100. Tickets go on sale Friday, December 7, at 10 a.m. and start at $22.50.
