Lunchtime Snob: Fattboy Burgers & Dogs

Hidden in the back corner of City View Village off Huebner Road and I-10, you'll find Fattboy Burgers and Dogs' second location, a counterpart to the original off Vance Jackson. If you can find a parking space, you'll find a fully customizable burger menu. I went with a Texas toast Fattboy (a half pound burger) lunch special, with jalapeños and the standard fixings of lettuce, tomato, grilled onion, pickles and mustard. The Texas toast didn't quite meet my "toasted" standard ... but good nonetheless.

Other options include sesame seed or wheat buns, bacon, cheeses, dressings, BBQ sauce, dill relish, grilled mushrooms or bell peppers. In addition to varying sizes of 100 percent ground beef burgers, they offer chicken breast and turkey burgers, hot dogs (a quarter-pound kosher Hebrew National) and salad. Fattboy's sides include fries, fried pickles, (don't worry, they are chip-style, not spears), fried mushrooms and onion rings.

A lunch special combo gets you either the Fattboy (half-pound) or the Slimboy (quarter-pound), fries and a drink for less than $10. During my visit with co-workers, we enjoyed the well-shaded, shared patio space for City View Village restaurant patrons. The deck is great if you're going to lunch with a group that can't come to a consensus on what to eat. Papouli's Greek Grill, Fattboys Burger and Dogs, Freebirds Burritos and Jimmy John's Sandwich patrons all have access to the shared outdoor space, so everyone can get food from their favorite place and enjoy it outside together.

If you still have room for dessert, Fattboy has got you covered. Believe it or not, there are bottomless toppings for their ice cream cups, cones, banana splits, sundaes and floats. Toppings range from Fruity Pebbles, marshmallows, Snickers, fudge, pineapple and Nilla Wafers.

Just next door is one of Big Hops Growler Station's locations, which begs the question: why not enjoy a burger and craft brew on the patio? Big Hops doesn't open until 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday, so keep that savory combo in mind for dinner.
