Man Taken Into Custody After Stealing SAFD Pickup, Leading Police on High-speed Chase

UPDATE 8:30 p.m.: A statement from the San Antonio Fire Department indicates that the workers were treating a patient, not getting coffee at a Starbucks as some reports have indicated.

A man is in custody after San Antonio police say he stole a fire commander's pickup and led officers on a high-speed chase early Thursday morning.

Around 8:30 a.m., a first responder vehicle was left unattended on Houston Street when a man got inside the truck. Authorities said the man then drove the truck through downtown, hitting multiple vehicles and various objects. He eventually sideswiped an 18-wheeler and also hit a charter bus.
In total, police said the chase lasted almost an hour and ended near I-35 and Loop 1604.

Despite the man's path of destruction, McManus said there were no injures throughout the chase. Authorities were able to detain the suspect, who has not been named but reportedly has several outstanding warrants, after some resistance.
McManus said the areas throughout the chase might see some traffic congestion due to the police's investigation of the incident.
