Maverick Music Festival Saturday Picks

Though Maverick draws from a deep pool of national talent, the festival also serves as a gathering call for some of the best acts the 210 has to offer. On the Arneson River stage, Fea—the extracurricular punk project of Girl in a Coma’s Phanie Diaz and Jenna Alva—will play their first public performance at 9:30 p.m. Creatura (11:20 a.m.), a Velvet-inspired quintet complete with droning viola, will play from their upcoming EP Open the Door. And Dark Planes, SA’s resident garage-blues connoisseurs who’ve recently upgraded to a four-piece (full-disclosure: bandleader John Mata is employed in a non-editorial department at the Current), will whip up a frenzy on the Arneson River Theater at 1 p.m.

At the festival’s Bizzare Bazaar, Austin/SA art and music online rag Mondo Nation will curate a third stage. Among the acts are the dominant Saakred y Los Teardrops (9 p.m.), a quartet led by cryptic SA artist Saakred. Also on the Mondo stage is Montreal-based Marie Davidson (4 p.m.), waxing in French over her somber, electronic riffs. Signed to Austin’s Holodeck Records, Marie performs in a sing-song Québécois, reminiscent of Serge Gainsbourg. All day at the Mondo stage, anticipate art-oriented acts in an intimate setting.
