“Wendy is such an impressive candidate, whose values reflect the values of all Texans– hard work, strong faith and great aspirations,” said Castro during a media Q&A session after the event. “And I’m confident that as this campaign transpires, people of all different political stripes, whether their Republican, Democrat or Independent, will see Davis is the right, strong leader for Texas.”
While heavy murmurings once signaled Castro might announce his own possible candidacy for statewide office, the mayor put those expectations to rest when he sought reelection at the start of the year. So what happened? “It wasn’t the right time for me,” said Castro, when asked. “But I’m so happy Sen. Davis will be our next governor and I believe she will be.”
Sizably outspent by entrenched Republican opponent, Attorney General Greg Abbott, Davis confirmed she met–and exceeded– her online "Day of Action" fundraising goal of $500,000, which took place the day following her announcement.
Davis is already seeing pushback from Abbott, who called Davis (a native Texan) a "California-style" candidate trying to, "sell Obama’s liberal agenda," immediately after her official bid.
Davis recently visited San Antonio pre-campaign trail when she, along with Castro and other state political leaders, pumped up a crowd of pro-choice advocates during the "Stand With Texas Women" rally at Sunset Station in July, as the Current previously reported.
Today also marks the Davis camp's release of its first campaign video.
