McNay Art Museum to Screen Spike Lee Documentary 4 Little Girls

As part of this spring’s Get Reel Film Series, which is curated by Lisa B. Thompson, an associate professor in the African & African Diaspora Studies Department at the University of Texas at Austin, the McNay Art Museum will screen director Spike Lee’s 1997 Oscar-nominated documentary 4 Little Girls. The film explores a 1963 hate crime that led to the deaths of four young African-American girls — Addie Mae Collins, 14; Carole Robertson, 14; Cynthia Wesley, 14; and Carol Denise McNair, 11.

On Sunday, September 15, 1963, four members of the KKK planted sticks of dynamite under the steps of the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama. The explosion killed the four girls and injured 20 more parishioners. The heinous act is said to have increased awareness of the Civil Rights Movement.

Although the FBI officially identified four white men as the perpetrators of the bombing, the case was closed in 1968 without charging anyone with the murders. Last year, the Library of Congress selected the documentary for preservation in the U.S. National Film Registry, an honor given to films considered “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.”
