Last Saturday marked two years since the world lost a musical and cultural icon of profound (and purple) proportions. While Prince’s passing lingers in the national consciousness due to investigations into the nature of his death at age 57, most fans prefer to focus on the considerable legacy of his work.

Timed to loosely coincide with the anniversary of the superstar’s earthly demise — and as a part of the museum’s mission to present art that highlights the narratives of people of color, an area in which the film was ahead of its time — the McNay will host a screening of Purple Rain, the classic Prince film about a young performer named The Kid who struggles with his sense of self, his family, his love life, and his fledgling music career. Whether you’re already a fan of the movie or are in serious need of a re-education in its import and delightfulness, this screening seems like the ideal time and setting to spend a couple of hours with it.
