Dear video game industry,
PAX South 2016 has come and gone with many people saying, “Where were you?”
Yes, we had some fine indie developers and a few known publishers like Devolver Digital and Capcom on hand to show off their upcoming games, but we miss the rest of you.
Don’t get me wrong, PAX South 2016 was a blast, but many attendees left wondering where the games and panels were. PAX is touted as an industry event that rivals E3 while designed for gamers to meet and have fun with other gamers. PAX South 2016 delivered on the latter, but sadly, not the former.
Although the official attendance numbers will not be available, it appears that PAX South 2016 was bigger than last year, which was already the largest inaugural PAX. Tens of thousands of gamers filled the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center and were more than willing to play whatever game you had for them or sit in on a panel where developers discuss their games at length. With February and March having so many major releases, this was the perfect time to build some hype for your games.
I get it. PAX South is only two years old and maybe too young to invest money in. But that didn’t stop practically every major developer going to PAX East in 2010 when it was only two years old.
So maybe it’s our lovely city, San Antonio. Yes, it’s not everyone’s favorite Texas city, Austin, and some people don’t even consider San Antonio to be a “real” city, but there’s a reason why it was selected to be the home for PAX South: The city actually caters to the convention goers. There are the multiple hotels ridiculously close to the convention center, a wide range of food and drink options within walking distance and more importantly, we’re cheap.
San Antonio isn’t like “other” Texas cities which have an almost never-ending amount of traffic, a downtown area that shuts down after 5 p.m. and ridiculously long commutes back and forth from the airport. Everything you need is in a nice, compact area for your convenience.
See video game industry, there’s a reason to come down to San Antonio and join in on the fun of PAX South. Hopefully, we’ll see you here in 2017.
