San Antonio, officially dubbed "Military City, USA" and home to more than 107,000 veterans, is only the 18th best place for veterans to live in the United States, according to a new study based on federal data. Austin ranks first.
A WalletHub study crunched U.S. Census Bureau data on a city's general livability for veterans — meaning it looked at veteran homelessness, job opportunities, quality of VA health care, etc.
According to these metrics, not only is San Antonio just the 18th best in the country, but it's the 4th best city for veterans in Texas alone. The Military City follows Austin, Plano, and Fort Worth in it's veteran livability.
Perhaps San Antonio fell short because it has such an immense population of veterans, more than it may be able to sufficiently take care of. Austin, which topped the list, has an estimated veteran population of 37,000 — which is nearly three times smaller than San Antonio's. Getting resources to veterans could be easier if there's fewer of them — maybe.
But for a city that's allegedly ended veteran homelessness, trademarked the name "Military City" and home to three major military bases, 18th is not a great look for San Antonio.
