Miss Tess & The Bon Ton Parade

Critic's Pick Release Date: 2011-03-16

When trying to describe Miss Tess’ music, the easy way out is to say she belongs in the jazz world. But her stuff is more complicated than that. While living in Boston, the now-Brooklynite won a local award for “Outstanding Folk Artist” and in the subsequent two years was nominated in the “jazz” and “roots” category. Her new EP, The Waltz Set, further complicates things: it is a collection of self-penned waltzes (duh) that transport you to a gone era of Ferris wheels and bicycle rides. The album includes a waltz cover of Skeeter Davis’ 1962 hit “End of the World.” Yet, everything sounds fresh. Her voice, the band (The Bon Ton Parade, consisting of lap steel, upright bass, drums, and her guitar) and the venue (Luna) are a match that perfectly fit the description of what a special night is. $8, 9pm Sat, Luna Fine Music Club, 6740 San Pedro, (210) 804-2433.
