The latest entry in Arts San Antonio’s 2017-2018 season is a show like no other. The performers of Mummenschanz transform the traditional stage, eschewing elaborate sets and musical accompaniment for a purely black background against which they move their bodies and artfully designed props to tell visual stories in utter silence. The company originated in Paris in 1972, drawing from the traditions of Pierrot Lunaire and classical dance to invent a new art form of “mask playing,” which they use to convey a narrative by creating “a playful paralanguage that can be understood by all.” Mummenschanz has performed and toured internationally for more than four decades, and has expanded to include new young artists alongside the two surviving founders of the company. Their latest offering, You & Me, was conceived by founding member Floriana Frassetto and tells an all-new story in their incomparable style.
