Party man

If you want to get a sense of Chubby Carrier’s artistic intent, all you have to do is sample his album titles: Ain’t No Party Like a Chubby Party!, It’s Party Time, etc. It doesn’t hurt to check out the album covers, such as the shot of Chubby on Ain’t No Party in huge shades and a cloud-busting afro, which satisfies any curiosity you might have about what LeBron James would look like if he time-traveled to the ABA era.

Zydeco, by nature and reputation, is a festive, buoyant music with little time for self-pity or nagging angst, and Carrier is one of its more irrepressible ambassadors. A native of Churpoint, Louisiana, the 38-year-old Carrier is a third-generation zydeco man, having mastered the bayou grooves by playing drums at the tender age of 12 for his father’s band. He later toured with the acclaimed Terrance Simien before launching his own band in 1989.

Chubby Carrier and the Bayou Swamp Band

9:30pm
Sat, May 6

Casbeers
1719 Blanco Rd.
732-3511

More than most zydeco masters, Carrier (who’ll be appearing at Casbeers’ 8th Annual Crawfish Boil on May 6) leans heavily on the genre’s connection to vintage blues and soul music. But whether he’s interpreting Bobby Bland’s defining “Turn On Your Love Light” or lending his swampy essence to the blues classic “Rock Me Baby,” Carrier doesn’t get too bogged down in the emotional details. Regardless of the setting, for Carrier, it’s always party time.
