Music my mom does yoga to 

Every time I go home to visit, I do yoga with my mom, a devoted practitioner of the Anusara style. She’s always playing crazy pop music while we practice, and it always works! She’ll be sharing her playlists with other yoga posers every other week.

The next two columns cover soul music. This week is not so much the genre as “music for your soul.” The Staple Singers, for example, are both. I consider this list to be yoga essentials.

Nina Simone “Feeling Good” – What better way to start your practice than with Simone’s life-affirming lyrics?

Staple Singers “Respect Yourself” – Always remember to respect yourself during your practice.

Miriam Makeba “Pata, Pata” – You will want to wag your dog or shake your tree to this gem by South African singer Makeba.

The Very Best “Julia” – The strong, uplifting rhythm is perfect for flowing poses.

Miles Davis “Time After Time” – A sublime version of Cyndi Lauper’s song that will transcend your practice.
