A week on the scene

Do the collapse

Since its inception six years ago, Exponential has provided a home for many of San Antonio’s most adventurous sonic auteurs. This week, the label — founded and run by producer/DJ Ernest Gonzales (aka Theory of Everything) — will unveil its latest offering, a 20-track, collaborative CD entitled Collapsing Culture. In addition to Gonzales, the disc features Aether216, A.M. Architect, Darby, and Mnolo. The album’s featured artists will be joined at the CD-release show by Daecos, DJ Starsign, and Low Line Caller. The release show for Collapsing Culture will be held at Limelight (2718 N. St. Mary’s) on Friday, May 12. Showtime is 9 p.m. and admission is free.

Fire starters

Delaware quintet Boysetsfire will storm into The Sanctuary (1818 N. Main) with Arizona ensemble Versus the Mirror and Fully Down on Monday May 15 for an early show.

Their recent release The Misery Index: Notes From the Plague Years, is a strident compilation of their traditional populism, accented by ardent, riled lyrics. After a three-year hiatus for the band, this is a dense, contentious album, with songs that represent a call to arms. Boysetsfire has fused heavy bass lines and Nathan Gray’s confident, emphatic voice with palpable chagrin over our current state of affairs, resulting in complete catharsis.

Versus the Mirror, Boysetsfire’s desert labelmates, is propelled by its vehemence and piercing honesty. Its explorations of the evolution of human emotion has made Home, the group’s debut, a cornerstone within current hardcore. Davey Seibold’s lyrics read like a conversation with an old friend, traversing boundaries and understanding. The boys’ energy onstage matches — if not surpasses — the album, so be prepared. Showtime is 7 p.m.
